In a recent announcement, retail giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) disclosed that it has teamed up with Boingo Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIFI) to offer fast, free Wi-Fi to Android-based smartphone and tablet users for a period of six months. The offer is applicable for users who download Boingo’s Wi-Finder app via Amazon Underground.
About Amazon Underground
Amazon Underground was launched in 2015 as a platform where all Android apps are available for free. Moreover, it doesn’t charge a penny for in-app purchases as well. Some of the apps and games on offer include the Office Suite Professional, Star Wars: KOTOR, Wreck-It Ralph and CityMaps2Go Pro among others.
The only impediment to using the service comes at the time of downloading it as Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google doesn’t allow the download of Amazon’s App Store or the service from its Play Store. One needs to visit Amazon.com/underground on an Android device in order to use the service.
How Does Underground Work?
Amazon has partnered with developers to provide free apps to users through Underground, thereby undercutting Google’s Playstore, where they have to pay for them. Instead, Amazon pays the developers on the basis of actual usage. Developers agree because the more the usage, the more money they make. The only catch – it has to be downloaded via Amazon Underground.
Since downloading also uses up consumers’ data, it’s no surprise that, Amazon has now partnered with Boingo to offer free Internet.
The Freebies
Downloading Boingo’s Wi Finder app through Amazon Underground would translate to getting free access to fast, free Wi-Fi at Boingo hot spots across hotels and airports throughout the country for a period of six months. This comes at an opportune time for summer travelers in the U.S. who could have otherwise tried Boingo’s services for just half an hour before getting pushed to its paid tiers.
We note that the deal ends on Dec 31, 2016. The six-month free subscription commences the moment the app is downloaded from Amazon Underground.
At present, Amazon carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
