Just-released data by the Investment Company Institute (ICI) showed that bonds remain in favour in the eyes of retail investors. Such funds attracted $31.8 billion in March, bringing the cumulative increase since the start of 2012 to a whopping $94 billion – the best showing ever for a first quarter. Equity funds, for their part, experienced an outflow for the tenth time in eleven months in March.

Cumulative outflows from domestic equity funds – funds that invest primarily in the U.S – have totalled $163 billions over the past year. As today’s Hot Chart shows, that is the worst performance on record. At this juncture, retail investors are unwilling to let domestic equities account for more than 40% of their asset mix. They are just redeploying profits as U.S. equity markets move up.
