The Land of the Rising Sun and the SKYROCKETING Nikkei.
Catching up to our DJIA in a hurry........
Here's the spread between the DJIA and the Nikkei over the past year. Will the Nikkei overtake the Dow tonight?
I started on the Chicago trading floors in the late summer/early fall of 1999. Heady times indeed. The move in the Nikkei reminds me of the tail end of the Nasdaq boom, but maybe I'm missing something.
The Nikkei is up 75% since the middle of November (when it became clear Abe would return as PM).
Between October 1999 and March of 2000 (the top)- the Nasdaq rose about 105%.
I'm not advocating picking tops, but what's going on is unusual.....like Zonkeys.
As an "Energy guy" I think one part of the Japan story that's under-reported is the fact that since the Earthquake/Tsunami/Fukishima meltdown in March of 2011 most of the nation's nuclear power has been offline. I could be off on my numbers, but I believe only 3 reactors are up and running more than 2 years later (out of 54 prior to crisis). Before March 2011, the Japanese depended on Nuclear for about 30% of their electricity. Maybe Solyndra set up shop outside of Tokyo.
Finally, a visual on Liquified Natural Gas prices in Japan.
