U.S. Rate Decision, Canadian GDP

  • The overwhelming focus was on the decision on monetary policy by the U.S. Federal Reserve (the Fed). Even if, as expected by the market, the committee did not raise the federal funds rate, the decision nevertheless triggered volatility in the markets.
    • The central bank appears to have taken advantage of the announcement to suggest that the rate may be raised in December 2015.
    • The day after the Fed announced its decision, the market received the first estimate of the U.S. GDP growth rate for the third quarter of 2015. Even if the data was only preliminary, the indicator came in at 1.6% compared to the 1.5% expected by economists.
    • In Canada, GDP was up 0.1% in August, bringing June-to-August growth to 3.4% on an annual basis, the highest 3-month rate since mid-2014.
