Market movers today
ECB Vice President Vito Constancio, ECB chief economist Peter Praet, and ECB board member Bernoit Coeuré are all scheduled to speak today. It will be interesting to hear if they have anything to say about how close they believe the ECB is to monetary easing and not least what instrument they prefer to use if additional easing is needed.
In Germany the SPD member postal vote on the coalition government with CDU/CSU coalition government has concluded and the result of the vote will be announced Saturday. If the coalition government is approved Merkel is expected to present a new government on Sunday.
In China the annual Central Economic Work Conference started on 10 December. At this meeting the policy makers will decide the main macroeconomic targets for 2014. The meeting usually lasts three days but there will be no official statement from the meeting so the macroeconomic targets are only gradually communicated to the market. We expect the target for GDP growth in 2014 to be cut to 7.0% from 7.5% in 2013 and the target for inflation to remain unchanged at 3.5%.
Otherwise we have an extremely light data calendar today.
