CFTC Futures data shows speculators decreased bearish bets
10-Year Treasuries Non-Commercial Positions:
Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators cut back on their overall bearish positions last week for a fourth consecutive week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.
The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -73,605 contracts in the data reported for June 2nd. This was a weekly change of +9,929 net contracts from the previous week’s total of -83,534 net contracts that was recorded on May 26th.
For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures declined by -15,832 contracts, but were overtaken by the short positions, which dropped by -25,761 contracts to register the overall net change of +9,929 contracts for the week.
Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday May 26th to Tuesday June 2nd, the yield on the 10-Year treasury note rose from 2.14 percent to 2.27 percent, according to data from the United States Treasury Department.
Commercial Positions:
In the commercial positions for the 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) raised their overall net bullish positions for the first time in four weeks to a total net position of +242,661 contracts through June 2nd. This is a weekly change of +18,215 contracts from the total net position of +224,446 contracts on May 26th.
