CFTC Futures data shows speculators raised bearish bets after five decreases
10-Year Treasuries Non-Commercial Positions:
Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators boosted their overall bearish positions last week after reducing bearish positions for five consecutive weeks, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.
The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -96,449 contracts in the data reported for June 16th. This was a weekly change of -59,870 net contracts from the previous week’s total of -36,579 net contracts that was recorded on June 9th.
For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures fell by -29,071 contracts and combined with a rise in the short positions by 30,799 contracts to register the overall net change of -59,870 contracts for the week.
Commercial Positions:
In the commercial positions for the 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) added to their overall bullish positions to a total net position of +253,505 contracts through June 16th. This is a weekly change of +27,072 contracts from the total net position of +226,433 contracts on June 9th.
IEF Bond ETF:
Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday June 9th to Tuesday June 16th, the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (ARCA:IEF) rose from 104.49 to 105.21, according to ETF data from Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) Finance.
