Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.05% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.59%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 5.15% or 1.99 points to trade at 40.60 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 2.40% or 2.32 points to end at 99.07 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 2.34% or 2.82 points to 123.32 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Raytheon Technologies Corp (NYSE:RTX), which fell 1.12% or 0.72 points to trade at 63.40 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 0.19% or 0.09 points to end at 46.90 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 0.02% or 0.02 points to 118.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Western Union Company (NYSE:WU) which rose 11.30% to 23.05, DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which was up 9.49% to settle at 16.16 and Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which gained 9.26% to close at 6.96.
The worst performers were Tiffany & Co (NYSE:TIF) which was down 8.93% to 117.03 in late trade, Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which lost 4.56% to settle at 4.19 and Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was down 3.34% to 58.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ameri Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AMRH) which rose 114.18% to 2.870, Precigen Inc (NASDAQ:PGEN) which was up 83.33% to settle at 3.96 and Genius Brands International Inc (NASDAQ:GNUS) which gained 53.44% to close at 4.0200.
The worst performers were Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which was down 30.23% to 1.800 in late trade, Aduro Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:ADRO) which lost 23.74% to settle at 2.570 and Aileron Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALRN) which was down 21.09% to 1.1600 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2099 to 771 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1573 rose and 1061 declined, while 74 ended unchanged.
Shares in Genius Brands International Inc (NASDAQ:GNUS) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 53.44% or 1.4000 to 4.0200.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.92% to 26.84 a new 3-months low.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.92% or 16.15 to $1734.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 4.03% or 1.43 to hit $36.87 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.08 to trade at $39.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1171, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 108.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 97.670.
