NEW YORK, July 17 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended mixed on Friday, with the Dow and Nasdaq up and the S&P 500 down. Upbeat earnings from IBM offset disappointing numbers from General Electric Co.
For the week, however, stocks put in their best gains since mid-March, with all three major indexes climbing 7 percent. The Dow was up 7.3 percent for the week, while the S&P 7 500 was up percent and the Nasdaq was up 7.4 percent.
For the day, based on the latest figures, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 32.12 points, or 0.37 percent, to end unofficially at 8,743.94. But the Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down just 0.36 of a point, or 0.04 percent, to finish unofficially at 940.38. And the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 1.58 points, or 0.08 percent, to close unofficially at 1,886.61. (Reporting by Caroline Valetkevitch; Editing by Jan Paschal)
