Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.03%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Hexo Corp (TSX:HEXO), which rose 6.95% or 0.4600 points to trade at 7.0800 at the close. Meanwhile, Empire Company Ltd (TSX:EMPa) added 5.17% or 1.62 points to end at 32.97 and Stars Group Inc (TSX:TSGI) was up 4.66% or 0.99 points to 22.23 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC), which fell 7.75% or 0.300 points to trade at 3.570 at the close. Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TSX:KEL) declined 7.24% or 0.310 points to end at 3.970 and ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) was down 6.23% or 0.43 points to 6.47.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 565 to 508 and 107 ended unchanged.
Shares in Empire Company Ltd (TSX:EMPa) rose to 5-year highs; gaining 5.17% or 1.62 to 32.97. Shares in ARC Resources Ltd. (TSX:ARX) fell to 5-year lows; losing 6.23% or 0.43 to 6.47.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.10% to 12.10.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.18% or 2.50 to $1412.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.19% or 0.11 to hit $59.27 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.11% or 0.07 to trade at $65.46 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.00% to 0.7637, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6718.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 95.752.
