Investing.com – The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in the United Kingdom fell less-than-expected in July, official data showed on Wednesday.
In a report, the U.K. Office for National Statistics said the claimant count fell by a seasonally adjusted 3,800 in July after declining 15,900 in June, whose figure was revised down from 20,800.
Analysts had expected the claimant count to fall by 17,000 in July.
The report said that the unemployment rate for the quarter ending in June was unchanged at 7.80%.
Average earnings fell less-than-expected, rising by a seasonally adjusted 1.3% in the second quarter, down from 2.7% in the first quarter.
Analysts had expected average earnings to rise 1.1% in the second quarter.
Following the release of the data, the pound was down against the U.S. dollar with GBP/USD shedding 0.47% to hit 1.5777.
