TOKYO, June 19 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average rose 0.5 percent on Friday after the U.S. Dow and S&P 500 edged higher, with investors picking up shares such as Canon Inc that fell earlier in the week.
The benchmark Nikkei rose 45.21 points to 9,748.93 in the first few minutes of trade. The Nikkei has retreated this week after hitting an eight-month closing high of 10,135.82 last Friday. The broader Topix rose 0.6 percent to 916.83. (Reporting by Masayuki Kitano)
