NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended modestly lower on Tuesday, with the Federal Reserve inching closer to further steps designed to support the recovery. The Dow ended up slightly.
Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 8.55 points, or 0.08 percent, to end at 10,762.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2.77 points, or 0.24 percent, at 1,139.94. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 6.48 points, or 0.28 percent, at 2,349.35.
